Using Persimmons in Autumn Desserts

You’ll know it’s autumn in Japan when you see persimmons everywhere. They grow easily on trees and seem to be sold in abundance at markets. They may not be the juiciest, flashiest fruit out there, but here are some different, delicious ways to appreciate this ubiquitous fruit!

Autumn in Japan means Persimmons (柿)! When I was a kid I really disliked this fruit – it was so dry, didn’t have much flavor and it always felt like there was just so much of it everywhere in autumn!

Part of why I love cooking is so that I can learn to appreciate ingredients that I disliked before, and give them a flavorful twist! While persimmons are still not my favorite fruit to eat as is, they definitely add a Japanese autumn, subtly sweet taste to my dishes. So we’re friends now.

Also let’s talk about the health benefits persimmons provide. There are several types of persimmons but the typical astringent Fuyu persimmon is loaded with antioxidants and soluble dietary fiber which slows the digestion of carbohydrates and prevents spikes in blood sugar. It also reduces the risk of heart disease. And one serving contains more than half the recommended daily intake of vitamin A so it’s great for your eyes!
