Introduction

Healthier Carbonara with Turkey Bacon

I was craving carbonara, a comfort holiday dish, but didn’t want to make something too heavy that I couldn’t finish up. So here’s a healthier alternative using turkey bacon.

For this recipe, I collaborated with Mega Meat Mart, an online gourmet meat shop that specializes in gluten-free and organic meat. The Jones turkey bacon I used has 70% lower fat content than regular bacon, and contains no MSG and fillers. It’s also naturally smoked without nitrates or preservatives!

Ingredients

  • Gluten-free turkey bacon, 5~6 slices
  • Gluten-free pasta of your choice, 2~3 servings
  • Egg, 1
  • Garlic, 1 clove
  • Yogurt, 1/4 cup
  • Grated parmesan cheese, 2 tbsp.
  • Ricotta cheese, 2 tbsp.
  • Italian herbs (oregano, thyme, basil, parsley)
  • Dried chili flakes
  • Salt, 1/4 tsp.
  • Ground black pepper

      Preheat your oven to 200C.

Line baking sheet with bacon. Make sure they don’t overlap!

      Bake for 10 min.

In the meantime, make your carbonara sauce. Mix egg, yogurt, parmesan, ricotta and salt well. Grate garlic and add to this mix too.

Add Italian herbs and dried chili.

Your bacon should be done by now. Flip your bacon and bake for an additional 2~3 min. Make sure to keep an eye out for it as it burns easily (speaking from experience…).

Drain your pasta then pour carbonara sauce over. Stir consistently over low heat for 1~2 minutes.

Break apart your bacon either with a knife or if it’s crispy enough, with your hands, and add to your pasta.

Add a dash of ground black pepper and serve warm!
